web design

Web designing can be tricky, before you kick off with the process, you need to be clear with the design principles. Don’t plunge into web designing with just your creative skills. Along with those skills, your technicalities should also be clear to make a particular project successful. Some design principles remain constant, irrespective of the business for whom you are building the website.

No matter if it’s web design in Adelaide or Florida, the set of principles are the same. There are certain dos and don’ts that you should be aware of while designing your next web project.

DOs

Consistent interface - The overall look and feel of the website should be consistent. For a praiseworthy user experience, make sure all the web pages are designed on similar lines. Right from typography to colours, navigation to styling, everything should harmonised.

Smooth navigation - Navigation plays a vital role for any online business site. You need to ensure the user easily get what they are looking for and this is possible only with easy-to-use navigation. Your top navigation can have sub navigation but make sure it is not cluttered and does not confuse the visitors. Just like on the top, the user also expects navigation at footer, you can put the main menu options in the footer. All pages (at least make sure important pages) should be just 3 clicks away. Too many clicks are not appreciated by the visitors. Navigation options should be labeled in simple and understandable terms.

Responsive website - I am sure at least 7 out of 10 people would be using their smartphones for browsing. Probably no person uses just a single device to visit any website. Digital devices of different screen sizes, smartphones, laptops, desktop everything is commonly used for viewing websites, so it becomes essential to embrace responsive website design. This ensure flawless viewing experience across all screen sizes.

DON’Ts

Make visitors wait - Web visitors don’t like waiting at all. In fact they tend to leave the site, if the page load takes more than 3 to 4 seconds. Optimise images and display some interesting content while page loading.

Too many typefaces and colours - Just to jazz up the site, don’t use variety of fancy typefaces. It’s distracting and looks unprofessional. Just play with 2 to 3 typefaces maximum and avoid using fancy fonts. As you need to create a balance effect, the use of too many colours will only annoy the users. The best solution is to stick to brand colours. Use colours as per the business type.

Show unnecessary pop ups - You have to accept the fact that pop ups are distracting and sometimes annoying too. As soon as the visitors visit the site if they notice pop ups to register or subscribe they get annoyed and might leave their site. Avoid automatic pop ups or time your pop ups so that the visitor can read page content and stay on the website for sometime.

Autoplay music - Like automatic pop ups, autoplay music is also disliked by visitors. Unexpected music when gets played at unexpected places like office space, public place really causes problems and irritation. Hence it is better to avoid autoplay music and in case if you are incorporating video make sure you keep a feature of sound on, off so that users can play sound only when they need.

More than anything else, good user experience is expected by the visitors. So to satisfy their needs, follow the design principles and strive to turn visitors into customers.
